Cool and rugged

Can a folder bike be "cool?" Yeah, I think the Dahon Mμ UNO probably counts as cool.

On the other hand, the Montague Paratrooper is "the tactical mountain bike that folds." Whoa! (There's also a civilian version.)

Go and ride

Among the rides mentioned by YarraBUG radio, the Mums & Dads on Bikes Rides caught my eye:

Kids in bike seats welcome! Kids in trailers welcome! Kids on training wheels welcome! Kids on tag-a-longs welcome! Kids on own bikes welcome! Want to ride with your rides for fun, exercise and socialising? Join us on one of our easy rides to one of Melbourne's many child-friendly destinations. Rides take place the first Sunday of every month. Rides leave from Jika Jika Community Centre, Plant Street, Northcote, Contact Kathy kbrunning@bigpond.com.

What's stopping the bamboo bike from shooting into the mainstream?

I hypothesise that it's a lack of a high-profile race winner on such a machine. But if ever there's a bamboo bike Tour de France winner, it will become the bike material du jour for the 'new golf' set.

Doyle's dream down the drain

The Lord Mayor of Melbourne had a dream of returning cars to Swanston St. A recent survey of options rejected that idea whole-heartedly, with most respondents preferring Option 6 "Decreased motor vehicle access".

I'd caution excitable cyclists that this wouldn't necessarily make Swantson St a pedaller's paradise—avoiding tangling with pedestrians could become even more a factor than it is now.

Err... there's a link buried in the first line of my comment up above :)

Anyway, Subaru offers courtesy Montague bikes at each of their showrooms while you get your car serviced.

It definitely falls squarely in the realms of recreational MTB. I'd consider riding the Yarra Trails on it. Would ride Lysterfield on it for a bet. Although I wouldn't be so keen on hitting the You Yangs Stockyards with it because the fork is just rubbish....

Treadly and Me

Was that an official test ride or does someone you know own a Montague? And would you be happy to take it out to the You Yangs?

HYG

I've had a ride on one of those Montague folding bikes. Not nearly as bad as I was expecting and if I recall, would probably ride better than my stock Yeah (Dahon copy).

That said, big wheels are still useless for folding....

On 'Two Wheeled Paramedics':

You have these in Melbourne, just not full-time in the CBD like London does. Likewise, since 2007 we've operated them in Adelaide. Again, not full-time, but for major events, and times when the CBD is particularly congested because of them - the events, not the bikes. Apart from being brilliantly effective in crowds or traffic, as a cyclist this is just about the most enjoyable way to spend a day at work I can think of.

Ta Treadly for another distracting stack of links to get lost in.

John the Monkey

Another good crop Treadly, ta!

Don't think Subaru stock any such Montague Bike these days. They ran a special a few years ago.

From my recollection they are meant to be a comfortable ride, not a freakishly small folder that won't carry a guy over 150lbs

They are now distributed properly in Australia tho - by a disti called Eureka Brands.
