Wear it with pride

I like bikes as much as the next cycling junkie, but this might be taking it a bit too far: bicycle-inspired jewelry. [Thanks tom]

Bicycles for humanity

Rush hour in Hobart

According to the Hobart Mercury:

The number of cyclists using Hobart's Inter-City Cycleway is so large it has developed its own rush hour

Rush hour in Melbourne

In Melbourne, cyclists get more space at train stations:

Cyclists will have access to secure parking for their bicycles at more train stations, in a bid by the State Government to discourage driving to stations. Public Transport Minister Lynne Kosky said cages had been built at 23 stations, with 10 more on the way.

(Will have to investigate some of these in person.)

Meanwhile, The Age also reports:

Melbourne is one of the developed world's most car-dependent cities, and the study sheds light on why: relatively poor access to public transport because the city is so spread out, and travel times 26 per cent slower than the car.

Bike lane errorist?

Reported by the Croydon Guardian a British MP "was stopped and searched by police under anti-terrorism laws after he was found taking pictures of a cycle path." [via [How we e][]]

Hasn't anyone told Mr Plod that ["real terrorists, and even wannabe , don't seem to photograph anything"][]?

Speeding tickets raise revenue and reduce collisions

Tom Vanderbilt notes

An interesting new paper from Michael D. Makowsky and Thomas Stratmann, looking at municipalities in Massachusetts…suggests that the revenue imperative in itself can help make the roads safer.

It's new!

More bikes than cars

Bikes outsold cars again in 2008, that's the ninth year in a row. I guess this is a good thing, although I've never really understood the significance of this statistic.

Pain on that crunched bike rack. Ouch.

Thanks for the link to the Abio & Strida review @ Momentum -- the same issue also reviews Dahon Curve, Xootr Swift, and something with the unfortunate name of "Asama." I have no idea which of these are available in Australia. http://www.momentumplanet.com/issue/37
