Here's why I try to avoid Swanston Street as much as possible:
Swanston Street is probably the busiest bicycle thoroughfare in Melbourne, and increasingly so if Bicycle Victoria's figures are any indication:

Work is just something I do between bike rides
I ain't complainin'. I ain't blamin'. I'm just sayin'. Swanston Street sucks for cyclists.

Hi Treadly,
I'm a member of Melbourne BUG and we've been part of the current campaign to improve Swanston St for cyclists. You can read our analysis of the options for the consultation (now closed">terrible personal loss at our website http://www.melbournebug.org.
We hosted an online petition for cyclists to record their support for our preferred option and have so far gathered 223 signatories. The campaign still has a way to go, as the next step will be for Council do decide on a couple of preferred options for final consultation and decision by the end of the year.

On weekends, I'd take Swanston over Elizabeth. On weekdays, I avoid both like the plague, and go down Peel/William...
I was talking with someone about this the other day... options seem to be a) make it really non-parking, which means removing all the cab ranks and all b) take bites ouf of the footpath to make parking space c) redirect bike traffic to elsewhere - maybe Russell St - and put some serious effort into joining it to st kilda rd ...
Treadly, I'm with you 100% on swanston. And yet droves of riders choose it over Elizabeth. Hey, what can I say. Its a free country. Did they at least get rid of the touring buses or are they still there? Cheers, Hielke
