A couple of bizarre bike lanes have come my way today. Firstly, this one from London's Daily Mail in December last year (via Magic Statistics):

(The article is worth reading just for the crackpot reader's comment about bike lanes being an example of Socialists at work. Priceless.)

Anyway, it sounds like this was a temporary balls-up while some roadworks were being done. As opposed to, say, the permanent arrangement on the Yarra Trail…

(Sadly, it appears that proposals to by-pass these steps have gone on the backburner—but YarraBUG is still pursuing it.)

The other bizarre bike lane (via wurple), sees road signs being installed in the bike lanes, as reported by the Whittlesea Leader:

Eye-rollingly bizarre. Who thought that was a good idea? It's not good for motorists and downright dangerous for cyclists. One would hope these will be removed pronto.

That's just nuts.

Hmm, it is somewhat ignorant of the purpose of a bike lane, isn't it? And I notice that the bike stencil overlaps into the gutter, so it's hardly a generous bike lane to begin with.

It's not a fake is it - it looks like a major lawsuit in the offing to me...

Well, the story says the signs are in Rufus St, Epping—that's not my local turf, so I haven't seen them with my own eyes but I've no reason to think that photo's a fake.

I reckon Peter's right: any reasonable person who had a tangle with a sign positioned like that, should certainly explore their legal options.
