I'm not sure how I missed this one last week: the Adelaide Advertiser held a commuter challenge last Wednesday – and by the sound of it the procedure was a bit more robust than the one run by the Herald Sun in Melbourne recently:

This morning four teams set off from designated points north, east, south and west of the CBD, one person on a bike and one driving a car, to see who would make it to their desk first.

Every cyclist arrived first while the motorists continued to make their way through the congested traffic, or searched for a spot in Waymouth Street's busy Topham Mall carpark.

Notably, IT analyst Gary Pike - who used a dedicated cycling route that runs parallel to the O-Bahn track - reached The Advertiser building 14 minutes ahead of photographer Tait Schmaal, who drove along a similar route.

That extraordinarily good result was used to support Bike SA's recent push for "green travel corridors" in Adelaide.

It's interesting that, unlike the Herald Sun story, the Advertiser doesn't paint this as "bad news for motorists" but more positively it comments on the need for more and better cycling facilities.

they have this theory that you should actually factor in how much of your workweek goes into paying for your car, and adding those hours on top of your actual "in car time" - it makes commuting by car TOTALLY longer than by bike etc.
