Bikes still win, even when they don’t

Another commuter challenge sees bikes come second – but they still win, so there.

There’s been another commuting challenge in the USA, this time in one of the Springfields. OK, the car won this time but I’m still going to spin it in favour of the cyclist:

Vehicle | Time | Fuel/fare cost

——–|———–|————–:

Car | 16 min | $2.54

Bike | 18 min | $0.00

Bus | 20 min | $0.75

Do I really need to say more? There wasn’t that much to pick between the options – except the cost.

And let’s not forget the health benefits of squeezing your arse out of the bucket seat and getting on a bike (see reports today in news.com.au and The Age). Chances are that if she exercised at all the motorist drove her car around to the gym after work (where she paid for her workout).

So with an overall saving in time (workout & commute simultaneously) and zero cost for fuel (or parking for that matter) cycling still wins, even when it doesn’t!

(By the way, watch the video and see how empty that bus is. Public transport commuters in Sydney and Melbourne would call that luxury.)
