It's not a bad idea having Mark Webber as a patron of the Amy Gillett Foundation. I don't really know much about him except that he drives very fast cars for a living. But I think that's the point - if a recognised and respected petrol-head is saying things like "Sometimes road users may not have an idea how much room a cyclist needs" well it's just possible that it may have some impact. But possibly not on the drink-addled brains of the would-be F1 champions on Victoria's freeways.

Very, very

Even so, I'm not convinced by Webber's assessment of cycling conditions in Victoria as being "very, very good" in comparison to Spain and Italy. My observation in Italy was that cyclists are universally accepted as legitimate road users, whereas I think we have not achieved that status anywhere in Australia.

Pause for thought

Webber is reported to be a cycling fan who rides his bike "in many different parts of the world". And David Coulthard apparently favours getting around on two wheels also. This should provide pause (or at least deceleration) for thought for hoons who would run cyclists off the road: that cyclist in their sights could well be a champion F1 driver!

A new Melbourne bicycle user group, NillumBUG are working with the Peter Brock Foundation. Sign of things to come? Anyway for those who may get their knick(er)s in a knot over such things, the auto industry got it's start from shared technology developed by the bicycle craze of the late 1800's
