Another mudguard hack
There seems to be an endless supply of bike fender innovators in my town. Of course, some are more successful than others…
Right near the spot where I noticed the previous mudguard hack, I spotted this one:

With a roughly cut-out PET bottle taped into the seat stays, I’m not sure that this guy is really trying.
However I’m sure that Dave Moulton will approve of the use of duct tape on this one!

The kids here do something similar for sound effects – they jam a smaller drinks bottle between the rear (knobbly) tyre and the brake mechanism, so that it makes an engine sound when they ride. It’s a variant of clipping a piece of card to the seat stay so that it fouls the spokes to make a motorbike sound that was popular when I was young, so very long ago.
You could use this as a theme for a future coffee table book :)
“Mudguards of the Northern Suburbs: a comparative pictional journey”
How about “Too cool for tools: The best of Melbourne’s slapdash bike hacks”?
I’m thinking a calendar in the first year or two, and maybe T-shirts and mugs before moving on to the glossy coffee table book.
