Ha ha! Yes, I believe that: I'm constantly amazed at the battle for the parking spot nearest the door whenever I'm unfortunate enough to go to a shopping centre.

Oh yeah, and can I say "…only in Queensland"?

I've seen worse. I've regularly seen people drive to their letterbox to get the mail because they were too lazy to walk. I've seen people drive from one supermarket car park to another two places away because it would shorten their walk. However, the worst I ever saw was two idiots in Sufferer's Parasite having a "stand off" over a particular vacant car park for long enough to create 16km of gridlock on a Sunday (I rode through it). Either of them could have relented and simply gone 20 metres down the road to a vacant spot.

I am not making any of this up.

If that really is the person's full commute, there are so many things that you could criticise about it. The fat thing is but one. And the environmental and social externalities go on the list also.

But I reckon "baffling" is as good a word as any to describe it.

Maybe she was just dropping in on her way to somewhere else? Maybe she suddenly realised she'd forgotten something and was getting out to walk back and get it? It's not only the fat-issue that comes up here, but the pollution generated for such a short trip, the fuel and other resources used, the extra car on the road, I could probably think of more. It does remain bafflng no matter how long you think about it.

I'm still hoping that it's a misunderstanding—that she was just pulling over to check something before driving a more significant distance (say, at least another 100 yards). But then I can't help thinking it's a perks of seniority thing: the lady gets an allocated parking spot with her position, so she's bloody well going to use it!
