A few months back we spoke about keeping the bugs out of your eyes while riding, but there didn't seem to be any solution for keeping them out of your nose and mouth. Well, I wish someone had pointed me to Swiss design studio atelier v and their DIY Fliegenfilter:

Frankly, I lack the superlatives to describe what I think of this idea—although I've got to say I'm not overly taken with the prospect of having a self-tapping screw jammed into my forehead in the event of frontal impact…

atelier v is full of some wild (but then again, maybe not so wild) gadgets knocked together from everyday implements. And if you want more cycling innovations, have a look at Flexabstand and Sommerpedale.

ROTFL How cool. How appropriate for strine conditions, the fly swatter.

If you really have a problem with bugs up yer nose, a problem I haven't encountered.... yet... remember the safety glasses you were talking about from the hardware store? What about a clear face plate like the welding or brush cutting ones?

You could always just breathe through your mouth and swallow them. Lots of protein. Yum.

Re body art, isn't body paint technically art and therefore not subject to "nakedness" assumptions in "polite" (puritan) society? The music would have to be good, though.

I've got no real problem with swallowing bugs, but inhaling them is a different question. Or only getting them halfway down your gullet and them having to hack and cough to get them out again. And they make me sneeze when I get them in my nose.

It serves me right for being a smart alec though—after weeks of bug-free riding I plunged through three thick clouds of them on the ride home last night. They must have known…

Oh, I inhaled a soda from laughing when I saw the picture. Screwing a fly swatter to the helmet -- brilliant!
