Cycling and pedestrian job at VicRoads
A rare vacancy for a cycling-related job is currently up for grabs at VicRoads.
Peter Chen passed on news of this opportunity that he uncovered on seek.com:
VicRoads currently have a vacancy for a Program Consultant – Bicycle & Pedestrian Programs. The successful applicant will manage components of the VicRoads’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs. They will develop technical standards and guidelines for bicycle and pedestrian facilities; manage individual projects and initiatives associated with the Victorian Bicycle Advisory Council (VBAC) and the Australian Bicycle Council (ABC); and provide policy and technical advice to senior management and the public on cyclist and pedestrian issues.
According to the position description, the “Primary Job Purpose” is to:
Manage components of the VicRoads’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs such as assessing the strategic fit of individual projects against VicRoads’ Bicycle and Pedestrian Programs Guidelines, monitoring the expenditure on individual projects and undertaking annual audits of projects that are completed each year to ensure that they are delivered in accordance with the standards and provide reports to regions on their performance
Develop technical standards and guidelines for bicycle and pedestrian facilities.
Manage individual projects and initiatives associated with the Victorian Bicycle Advisory Council (VBAC) and the Australian Bicycle Council (ABC).
Provide policy and technical advice to senior management and the public on cyclist and pedestrian issues.
Once you translate all the HR-speak it actually sounds like a good one—and opportunities to get paid for doing cycling stuff don’t come along very often. Hopefully someone with nous and a genuine interest in cycling/pedestrian issues will apply.
Applications close on 19 January.

Sounds like a plum job for the right candidate, wonder if it’s supporting Tony Barton’s existing role or …. ?
Ok, I’m off to ask some questions from the usual suspects. ;)
I can only assume that VicRoads is seriously looking for an outside applicant—I doubt they would go to the expense of using a third party agency if they were just going through the process of advertising so that they can fill the vacancy with an incumbent.
Anyway, if cfs or anyone else learns anything more, please pass the gossip this way.
