Lentil-eaters rejoice: the beret helmet is here!

And now a helmet that would make you look like a knob. Literally.

Lentil-eaters will be pleased that they no longer have to put their berets over their helmets before riding to work at the book shop. Radio Prague reports on the development of bike helmets made in the style of “radiovka” beret.

If this thing gets a commerical release then latte-drinking bicycle-clipped vegetarians of North Fitzroy and East St Kilda will be able to enjoy their favourite headwear and comply with the road rules. Talk about a win-win situation!

Fortunately the design is unlikely to get past the status of conceptual artwork—the helmet companies don’t appear to be beating a path to the door of designer Ondrej Stanek: At first, they looked like they might be interested but not anymore.

Concludes Radio Prague:

It’s probably better the pieces remain just sculpture after all. In the end, what self-respecting cyclists would really want to admit to flipping over the handlebars with nothing on their heads but a plastic beret?

  1. Heh, I reckon they look like a great idea… but that may only be because I despise bicycle helmets anyway. Mostly for the compulsory imposition.

I’d have a bright orange one, anyway.

  2. Ah, but if you had it in orange it wouldn’t be a real “radiovka” beret, would it? (You can have them in any colour you like as long as it’s black).
