Hail a bike instead

Cyclist beats subway and taxi commuters in a New York City commuter challenge.

‘Tis the season for Commuter Challenges in the Northern Hemisphere: last Friday saw three New York City commuters go against each other by bike, subway, and taxi travelling from Brooklyn to Manhattan (Gothamist reckons that’s just under 6km or about 3.7 miles in old money).

According to organisers Transportation Alternatives the winner was:

Amy DeSalvo, who biked from Brooklyn to Manhattan in 25 minutes. Steve Long came in second riding the subway, at 32 minutes, and taxi rider Anissa Graham came in third at 40 minutes.

Let’s do the same fuel/fare comparison that we did for the Springfield challenge last week:

Vehicle | Time | Fuel/fare cost

——–|———–|————–:

Bike | 25 min | $ 0.00

Subway | 32 min | $ 2.00

Taxi | 40 min | $13.00

Transportation Alternatives reports

New Yorkers have the longest average commute in the country, about 45 minutes. However, the average bicycle commute in New York City only takes 30 minutes.

Small wonder that “Cycling is booming in New York, while automobile usage is on the decline.” Mind you, plenty of commenters at Gothamist want to argue the toss…
