Yesterday as I labelled sun-avoiders idiots I didn’t mention (although I did consider) those who really can’t get out in the sun for one reason or another. Co-incidentally The Australian reports today that too little sun
is jeopardising the health of large numbers of nursing home residents, dark-skinned immigrants and veiled women and their children.
Yep, rickets is making a comeback.
But frankly I find Professor Peter Ebeling’s solution – liberalising the TGA regulations on vitamin D supplements – a bit pharma-centric. As a first measure surely we can just take our oldies outside into the sun a few times a week? Apart from the vitamin D benefits, how unpleasant must it be to stay holed-up inside all the time? I’m looking out a window at uninterrupted blue sky and I’m annoyed to be missing it – but at least I’ve already been out there in it and I know I’ll be going out again before the end of the day.
That’s not really anything to do with cycling but it supports my argument and I won’t let irrelevancy stand in the way of a good ol’ rant…
