We’re all familiar with the scenario: cyclist is hit by car then the motorist disappears leaving the injured cyclist in the gutter. Well the Ballarat Courier has a new variation. In Ballarat, the Police have the driver and the damaged car but no victim, according to Senior Constable Biggs:
“The damage is consistent with a decent collision, not just a tap,” he said.
“He’s collided with the front of the car, gone up the bonnet and into the windscreen, which has caved in.
“It seems strange that in Rubicon St between 5pm and 5.30pm on a Friday, we’ve had a bloke hit another bloke on a bike and nobody sees it. There’s been nothing except for [the driver] and the fact that his vehicle has damage that is consistent with a collision.”
“the right thing”
The Senior reckons the driver did “the right thing” by turning himself in to police. But that was over 45 minutes after the incident – plenty of time for a seriously injured person to bleed to death. It seems unlikely that this has happened in this case, but it’s hardly the point. I really feel for the driver but I don’t care how “panicked” someone is, failing to render assistance at the scene of an accident is a crime and turning yourself in later doesn’t make you a good guy.
Still, I suppose it’s going to be hard to lay charges in the absence of a victim. Here’s hoping the cyclist is OK.
