Now here's something I wish I'd done while we were in Italy. For four and a half days Laura Domela spent an hour each day photographing bicycle commuters from an apartment window in Amsterdam. The results, as shown in this excerpt (PDF, 1.8 MB), are really fun and interesting.

They're nowhere near the standard of Domela's photography, but for what they're worth here are some cycling-related shots we took in Italy...

Thanks - I'm glad you like them.

It was with some annoyance that I found that we hadn't taken nearly as many photos of cyclists and bicycles as I'd thought. Next time we travel I think we'll be more diligent about that.

Part of the problem is that bikes whip past so quickly - you need to be ready, which is why Domela's idea is so good: just sit in a good vantage point and wait for them to roll by. When I think of the colourful variety of cyclists we saw in our street alone - mothers laden down with kids and shopping, young suits, old grannies, and more - I could just about kick myself for not trying Domela's approach.

Oh well, it can't be helped now.

Fantastic photos!!!!!!

Wouldn't it be great to a collection of all such photos from around the world and put them into a "coffee table" book. ..... I'll just go off and find the camera now.
